American Heart Month & Cardiovascular Clinical Research
Kayla Cox
American Heart Month is recognized every year in February to raise awareness for heart health. The month centers around education and resources on the risks of cardiovascular disease and managing and identifying heart-related conditions. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Heart, Blood, and Lung Institute (NHLBI) recognize heart disease as the leading cause of death in the United States. 1 in 5 deaths are the result of cardiovascular disease. Additionally, heart disease is costly with an average $252 million dollars spent on it in the U.S. in a year1. This month is also a time to highlight self care methods that can both directly and indirectly keep your heart healthy. Examples of some of these practices are staying physically active, consuming healthy food, keeping stress levels low, and avoiding alcohol and tobacco. Daily choices such as these can keep you healthy and subsequently lower your risk for cardiovascular disease.
While the month calls attention to ways to reduce heart disease, it is also a time to recognize the advancements in cardiovascular clinical research. The American Heart Association (AHA) was founded in 1942 and originated as an attempt to speed the discovery of solutions for heart disease. The organization’s main focus after World War II was raising funds, spending money on research, and awareness campaigns. With almost 32 million current volunteers, donors, and supporters, the AHA has been able to advance to support more cardiovascular research and cut cardiovascular deaths practically in half as of 2024. Some of the most important developments in cardiovascular health have come about in the last century including preventative cardiography from the Framingham Study that has shaped American Heart Month today.
