Importance of Healthy Participants in Clinical Trials

Importance of Healthy Participants in Clinical Trials

Kayla Cox

Many individuals think of clinical trials as reserved for treating patients who are suffering from chronic illnesses, like cancer or type I diabetes. While these individuals certainly do benefit from clinical research, healthy participants are just as important in Phase I of many trials. It is essential for many trials that healthy participants participate before testing on more vulnerable patients. While the drug or therapy may be completely safe for healthy individuals, it could have detrimental effects on more vulnerable ones.

There are many reasons why healthy participants should, (and do), want to be involved in clinical research but motivation to advance science tends to be a frontrunner. Healthy participants of underrepresented populations are especially in demand for clinical trials. Due to the historical lack of representation of clinical trials by gender, race, ethnicity, etc., it is vital that research includes diverse populations. Treatments may impact individuals differently and it is important to ensure that researchers are aware of the differences and that treatments and therapies are effective for everyone.

“Healthy participant” is not a subjective term as all research protocols will outline specific enrollment requirements for participants. The most common criteria includes sex, age, weight, and medical history. The specifics for these criteria will depend on the type of research conducted. Healthy participants should also consider the time commitment and the contents of the trial. Many trials last from weeks to months so participants should consider whether they can commit to the full duration. The contents of the trial are of particular importance to healthy participants as some there may be varying levels of comfortability among individuals.

The FindMyClinicalTrial platform makes the process for searching for clinical trials more streamlined for everyone. Healthy participants can search for trials recruiting them and be directed to the researchers, criteria, time commitment and more to consider before getting involved. Many of these trials also offer financial compensation. If you’re interested in participating in a clinical trial, you can use our clinical trial search engine at app.findmyclinicaltrial.org
